Summer 2021 News Letter

Summer 2021 Clinic Update

What a year we've had since we last sent you an update. We can only express gratitude for the many patients who have continued to seek our support and guidance through this incredible journey. You have helped keep our little business afloat through very tough times.

While we are catching a glimpse of the world opening before us we know that this does not mark the end of all of our challenges especially for patients whose health is still fragile. Not all of us are seeking to "get back to normal". The quiet solitude of our pandemic year or the extra time spent with our family's, along with the caution the whole world took to protect our most vulnerable citizens was a gift for many. Saying that we are infinitely looking forward to seeing more patients (and each other) in office and getting back to healthy routines. There are so many patients that we have yet to "meet" in person and although I know telemedicine has been wonderfully convenient we welcome any patients who would like a in-office visit to please let Angel know.

Change couldn't come at a better time..

New Offerings from Dr. Andrea Whelan

Having a baby during COVID was amazing and I feel blessed to have had this time to really focus on motherhood and slowly get back into practice. Saying that I have kept busy with research and online education in order to provide my current and future patients with upmost quality care. I have found a love in treating digestive issues, food and environmental allergies, stress and burnout, and in particular addressing the mental and emotional aspects of ones condition. In my experience, when the nervous system is calm and the body digests food (and emotions) appropriately, a person can more easily heal regardless of what their condition is or what symptoms they are experiencing.

To deepen my knowledge and expand my toolkit, I have taken the following trainings in the past year:

  • HeartMath Clinical Certification for Stress, Anxiety, and Emotional Regulation

  • Evidence Based EFT/Emotional Freedom Technique

  • The SIBO Mastery Program (in progress)

  • Mastering Inflammatory Bowel Disease - An Advanced Course for Holistic Practitioners

This adds to my existing certifications in:

  • Administration of intravenous therapies along with 5 years of experience doing advanced IV therapeutics.

  • Acupuncture

  • Prescribing privileges. As an ND I have a wide range of pharmaceuticals I can prescribe if I deem it safe and appropriate.

I have also brought in supplies necessary for Scratch Testing of Environmental Allergies.

  • This test is performed in-office and helps us to determine if you have an allergy to dust, grass, tree, weed, pollen, mold, cat or dog. These allergies can be year long or seasonal and contribute to allergic conditions such as hayfever, asthma, sinus congestion, and irritated eyes. Environmental allergens can also be connected with oral allergy syndrome, and understanding cross reactivity can be part of our treatment strategy.

  • The results can help determine if allergen avoidance or SLIT (sublingual immunotherapy) is appropriate for you as a non-invasive method for allergen desensitization.

  • The cost is $60 + $75 for 20 minute visit.

More about the HeartMath training program

HeartMath is a combination of science-based techniques and technology to assess and enhance heart rate variability (HRV) and coherence. By measuring HRV and coherence in real time, it creates an awareness of how your thoughts, emotions, and breathing can impact your body’s physiology. You also learn how to influence your physiology positively to maximize your body and mind's potential.

HRV is a strong marker of physiological resilience, and reflects our ability to adapt effectively to stress and environmental demands. The higher HRV and coherence you can attain through training, the more resilient you become. Resilience not only makes life easier and more enjoyable, but it lays a solid foundation for health.

Dr. Whelan is now a HeartMath Certified Practitioner, and uses HeartMath tools and technology to teach and empower patients to self regulate their emotions and behaviours. She believes that mental & emotional wellbeing is one of the greatest foundations for health, and often necessary to achieve one's goals.

Hormone Health - Are You Balanced?

The current wave of research and study of hormonal health is fascinating.  It is a massive jigsaw puzzle slowly being put together.  Hormones make each of us completely unique - the issues of obesity, unexplained fatigue, low grade depression and anxiety, insomnia, and the vague feeling that you could feel better, are wrapped up in the mystery of hormonal balance. For me solving this mystery is the most challenging and rewarding part of clinical practice.

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement and Women’s Health

As women we know how important hormonal balance is.  We have felt the effects of hormonal change since adolescence and are acutely aware how life events, diet, and sleep all seem to impact our menstrual cycles.  Many women have used the birth control pill to create stability in what can be a far too unpredictable monthly cycle.  Pregnancies can sometimes help and sometimes disrupt our delicate hormonal cascade. Perimenopause can start as early as our thirties, dramatically altering our mood and energy, followed by a long transition of up to 10 years to menopause.  It can seem as if we are slaves to our hormones with very little control.
